Multiple Intelligences

null
We learn through all of the intelligence styles, but we have certain learning preferences that are stronger than others. Choose strategies that support your student’s strongest learning preference when helping them with homework or studying.
For Verbal/Linguistic Learners
These learners learn by saying, hearing and seeing words. They can easily memorize names, dates, places and trivia. To help verbal/linguistic learners:
-Use descriptive language
-Have them study by reading, writing, telling stories, playing word games and working with jokes and riddles
-They are good at creating imaginary worlds
For Logical/Mathematical Learners
These learners are adept at categorizing, classifying and working with abstract patterns and relationships. They work well with reasoning, numbers, abstractions, logic, problem-solving and moving from the concrete to the abstract.
-Compare and contrast ideas
-Create a timeline
-Classify concepts/objects/materials
-Read or design maps
-Use a Venn diagram to explain…
-Teach using technology
For Bodily/Kinesthetic Learners
The brain’s motor cortex, which controls bodily motion, is the key to the intelligence of bodily/kinesthetic learners. These learners process knowledge through bodily sensations and need to touch, move and interact with space.
-Create hands-on projects
-Conduct hands-on experiments
-Create human sculptures to illustrate situations
-Reenact great moments from history
-Make task or puzzle cards.

How to Help Reluctant Reader

null
Do you have a child that does well in all academic areas of study, but for whatever reason can’t or won’t read? If so, you aren’t alone. Parents and teachers constantly struggle with reluctant readers, and finding ways to get them to want to read.
Some children struggle with reading fluency. If they are reading very slowly, or not able to really put sentences together, that definitely isn’t motivating. You could try having more time for reading aloud. Having parents, or older siblings, read to children helps them hear what they are trying to accomplish with reading fluency. Also, along with reading aloud, you could have your children read along with audiobooks. Having the words in front of them, while listening to how they are read, would be an excellent learning exercise.
If it’s not reading fluency that is hindering your child’s ability to read, maybe they need to work on their reading vocabulary. Building a strong vocabulary is certainly a big benefit when it comes to reading, but there are so many other areas in life where it’s just as important; writing, critical thinking and verbal expression – just to name a few. There are several ways your child can work on their vocabulary. They play games, both board games and online games. They can use flashcards (hey, they work for math facts!); even a good crossword puzzle can lead to improvement.

The Amazing Pagudpud Beach

null
If you’re looking for a place that can be like Hawaii, Pagudpud is the place to visit. The strong winds and waves can be compared to that of Hawaii which makes this place often visited by surfers. Pagudpud also has long continuous white sands and inviting beach waters for people looking to just swim. Compared to Boracay, this place is more secluded.
The town is bounded to the south by the town of Bangui and to the east by the Cordillera Mountain Range, the town of Adams and the province of Cagayan. The South China Sea lies to the west and north. The town rolls over mountains, hills, valleys and flat coastal land. It lies 45 miles (72 km) north of Laoag City, the provincial capital, and about 350 miles (560 km) north of Manila. They reside in 3,804 homes that are spread across 83 square miles (210 km2). Most make their living through farming, fishing and subsistence retailing. Tourism is a growing part of the economy.
Pagudpud was made a municipality on February 3, 1954. Unlike Laoag City, the province’s only autonomous city, Pagudpud derives its authority from the provincial government. It had previously been a part of the neighboring town ofBangui.

Bermuda Island

null
An isolated paradise, Bermuda sits right in the middle of the great chasm – the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Europe. Couple that with a history of English settlement and you have an island that is as unique as its topography. This Caribbean islands travel destination is spotlessly clean, quaint, orderly, and extraordinarily pretty. Think pink and green. Pink for the pastel shades that wash this 21-square mile island. And green for the color of money that Bermuda’s offshore banking and insurance sectors generate. Plus, it is only a convenient 2 ½ hour flight from most major cities on the US East Coast.
There are no slums, no billboards, and very, very few fast food outlets. Inconvenient? Not likely. Because all this is minor compared to the glorious sight this Caribbean islands travel destination offers. From the colonial architecture of the tidy homes that line its roads to the fragrant tropical flowers – Bermuda is all beauty and grace.
Bermuda was discovered in 1505 by Spanish sea captain Juan de Bermúdez, after whom the islands are named, who claimed it for the Spanish Empire. Although he paid two visits to the archipelago, Bermúdez never set foot on the uninhabited islands because of the dangerous reef that surrounded most of the islands. Subsequent Spanish or other visitors are believed to have released the feral pigs that were abundant on the island when settlement began. The archipelago was settled by England in 1609, by the Virginia Company, which had established Jamestown on the Continent two years earlier.

Transparent Smartphones Soon!

null
Over the last few years all of the electronic components (processor, memory, touch-screen, batteries) in a modern gadget like a smartphone have been demonstrated in transparent versions in the lab. Now it is only a matter of a few years before all the pieces are integrated into see-through, bendable electronic gadgets that will rock your world.
One recent development in this front was presented at this week’s American Chemical Society 2012 conference. There, visionary Rice University professor James Tour described his transparent memory invention and how it can be combined with transparent processors from the University of Cambridge and transparent batteries from Stanford University to create flexible touch-screen electronic gadgets, such as a see-through smartphones you can wrap around your wrist.
Researchers at Rice have made progress in developing a three-dimensional (3D) version of Tour’s memory so that ultra-thin multi-layer transparent memories could be built up to store enough bits to be useful in future transparent electronic gadgets.

Moderate Alcohol Intake for Lower Risk of Second Heart Attack

null
The online issue of the European Heart Journal reports that a study of almost 2,000 American men has demonstrated that men who survived a first heart attack and who consume alcohol in moderation have a lower risk of dying from heart disease or any other cause than non-drinkers.
The latest results from the US Health Professionals Follow-up Study, a prospective study of 51,529 US male health professionals, demonstrates that the any-cause mortality risk for men who survived a first heart attack and who consumed about two alcoholic drinks daily over an extended period of time was 14% lower, and the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease was 42% lower than in men who did not consume alcohol.
First author, Dr. Jennifer Pai, assistant professor of medicine at Channing Laboratory, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and a research associate at Harvard School of Public Health, declared:
“Our findings clearly demonstrate that long-term moderate alcohol consumption among men who survived a heart attack was associated with a reduced risk of total and cardiovascular mortality. We also found that among men who consumed moderate amounts of alcohol prior to a heart attack, those who continued to consume alcohol ‘in moderation’ afterwards also had better long term prognosis.”

What is the Liver Biopsy?

In theory, a definitive diagnosis of liver cancer is always based on microscopic (histological) confirmation. However, some liver cancers are well differentiated, which means they are made up of nearly fully developed, mature liver cells (hepatocytes). Therefore, these cancers can look very similar to non-cancerous liver tissue under a microscope. Moreover, not all pathologists are trained to recognize the subtle differences between well-differentiated liver cancer and normal liver tissue.
null
Also, some pathologists can mistake liver cancer for adenocarcinoma in the liver. An adenocarcinoma is a different type of cancer, and as previously mentioned, it originates from outside of the liver. Most importantly, a metastatic adenocarcinoma would be treated differently from a primary liver cancer (liver cancer). Therefore, all of this considered, it is important that an expert liver pathologist review the tissue slides of liver tumors in questionable situations. New advances in immunohistochemistry (staining the microscopic cells with proteins that identify cell types very specifically) have helped to be able to tell the difference among cell and cancer types more reliably.

Watch “Jack and Jill” Movie

null
Jack and Jill is a comedy focusing on Jack Sadelstein (Adam Sandler), a successful advertising executive in Los Angeles with a beautiful wife and kids, who dreads one event each year: the Thanksgiving visit of his identical twin sister Jill (also Adam Sandler). Jill’s neediness and passive-aggressiveness is maddening to Jack, turning his normally tranquil life upside down. Katie Holmes plays Erin, Jack’s wife.
Sandler has become a good actor of late, but here he gives over most of his talents to Jill, who is so screechy, needy, and lovelorn that you can hardly blame Jack for wanting to fade into the background. Pacino, caricaturing his patented intensity, is pretty outsized as well. This is the first time he has played a character this harmlessly goofy, and it makes you wonder if he’s trying to compete with Robert De Niro, who long ago decided to lampoon his intensity in films like the “Analyze This” and “Fockers” series. Pacino’s grandstanding is funny for a while until you realize that, given the calculated tepidness of most mainstream movies, Pacino may not have many opportunities these days to be great. Grade: C+ (Rated PG for crude and sexual humor, language, comic violence, and brief smoking.)

The Relevance of Oral Communication in Business

The importance of oral communication in the workplace cannot be undermined. Business leaders nowadays, are laying increased emphasis on improving the way communication flows in their organization. Researchers who have extensively studied the impact of effective oral communication in business have analyzed some methods which if employed can improve oral communication in business. Let us take a look at some of these steps.
null
Humans have a natural tendency to be led and they work to the best of their potential when led by a strong, able leader. Being an effective leader doesn’t necessarily mean giving out orders all the time or saying languidly, “I want it done, now”, instead effective leadership is built on the foundation of a mutual respect between the manager and his sub-ordinates.
· Carrying out frequent feedback is important, but these would be of no good use if the employees view it as just another formal exercise. I remember one of my friends working in a customer service organization getting excited every time he was told that he needs to meet the human resource manager for a feedback session.
· Last but not the least, most of the researchers are of the view that body language plays an important role in having an effective oral communication process. While having a face-to-face interaction, you have to remember that the listener will pay as much attention to your words as your body language.
